Chapter 10
BART
Bart hadnât meant to kiss Margaret. Heâd been intoxicated by her smell and the feel of her skin through her thin nightgown. Her lips had been so close, ripe for the taking, and heâd feasted.
If they hadnât been interrupted, would it have gone further? Heâd been in a fever from her closeness, the sounds of her pleasuring herself the night before still ripe in his mind. When her lips had touched his, a deep ache had stabbed him in the center of his heart.
It scared him. Heâd been cut down to nothing by the people he loved too times.
Margaret was a good woman. A proper lady. He was a drunk, worthless doctor. What would come of their interlude?
Pain and eventual rejection.
He snatched up his notebook. Heâd almost let her read the story. Sheâd been genuinely interested, and even if she detested it, she was too well-bred to say anything hurtful, but he couldnât bear it if he saw disappointment in her face, even if she spoke niceties.
Over the next hour, he scribbled another chapter. The words flowed out of him. The story was about a little boy who lived in a field of towering sunflowers. They blocked the sun from reaching the young child. He knew the light was above him, just out of reach. Heâd climb the thick stalks, but they always bent backward, dropping him into the darkness before he could reach the sunshine.
The boy lived among the ground dwellersâ¦the chipmunks, moles, and snakes. The little boy befriended the snake, but it enticed him to do bad things, like block the holes so the moles couldnât get out. The boy didnât want to hurt the creatures, but he didnât know how to escape the shadowy grip of the snake.
Bart put his pen down, wondering how the boy would finally get out of the never-ending meadow of darkness.
